Networking advice from business leaders
Done right, networking is a powerful tool for success. Done wrong, it can waste an executive’s irreplaceable time, money, and opportunities.
Proven Media Solutions CEO Dustin Siggins recently interviewed Never Eat Alone author Keith Ferrazzi and Art of War for Small Business author Becky Sheetz-Runkle on how executives can build their networks for success.
Know your goals
Sheetz-Runkle said “small businesses can make the mistake” of having a large network without “understanding how to best leverage these partnerships.” She advised executives to have “deep understanding” of potential networking partners.
She said every networking effort should have one goal in mind. “If the alliance isn’t designed to play a role in generating revenue, it’s probably a waste of time.”
Specific steps to networking success
Ferrazzi is the master of building a great network. He advised three steps and “pro-active attention” for networking success.
First, said Ferrazzi, “identify your goals and what you want to do.” Second, executives must find people “surrounding that goal” who “can be of service.” Lastly, “bust your butt to be of service” to effective network partners.
Ferrazzi’s strategy is deliberate and precise. It requires knowing one’s organizational goals, developing strategies, and having the discipline to stay on course.

We hold this same principle when putting clients in the press. Placing clients in one great outlet is better than many placements in poor outlets.
